UDL ASSIGNMENT
After completing the learning styles survey I learned that I was an auditory and visual learner. I always knew I was a visual learner because I have always done better when someone shows me or demonstrates how to complete the skill before I try to. The learning styles survey said I benefit from lectures, which I am not sure to be true because I find lectures to be boring and I usually get distracted easily and off topic. Some suggestions the survey offered to improve my study skills were to work in groups or with a ‘study buddy’. Another suggestion was to read out loud when I am studying as well as reading and to bring a tape recorder to class to record lectures.
The CAST website was very useful and interesting. I really liked that every chapter was broken down further into different formats; for example, there is a concept map for every chapter to help the reader better understand the chapter. There is also a key ideas section so the reader can see what the key ideas are before they read the chapter to get a better understanding of what is going to be explained as well as the main points of the chapter. Furthermore, the chapters are broken down into sections so they are easier to read. I thought all of this was very useful, especially since everyone reads and retains information differently. After reading the sections it helped me to go back to the main ideas and the concept map. Also in the sections of the chapter, words that are often misinterpreted or often unknown are highlighted and are linked to their definition.
While reading and reviewing the CAST website I found it interesting that information is processed through three different networks in the brain. It is important as an aspiring teacher to know how to get the information to pass through all three networks for students to succeed. I will have to make sure students know what they are learning, show them how they are going to learning the information and why it is important for them to learn it.
Also teachers need to make goals attainable to everyone. Some teachers make their goals to specific that not all students will be able to be successful. This website helps and gives suggestions to make goals more attainable and the methods teachers can use to help students attain the goals.
While completing the exercises in the activities I thought they were helpful in getting me to notice the different networks of the brain. I especially liked the activity with the picture and how they showed you the different eye movements of someone else who had completed the activity also.
I would like to know more about how the teachers can use UDL to differentiate students. I also would like to know more about strategies to make sure every student understands and that the information passes through every network in the brain so they can better understand and grasp the concept of the new skill that is being taught.
